What Causes Pink Eye?

Pink Eye

The eyes are vital organs in our body. Any problem with the eyes can negatively impact your day-to-day activities. Unfortunately, eyes are prone to many issues requiring professional eye care. If you notice that your eyes look bloodshot or feel irritated, you may have pink eye. Unfortunately, pink eye is highly contagious and requires urgent treatment. Understanding what causes pink eye can help you avoid getting infected and spreading it to others. Eyes on Hayden has prepared some of the causes of pink eye.

What is pink eye?

Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is an infection or inflammation of the conjunctiva. Conjunctiva is the membrane that outlines the white part of the eye. Pink eye is associated with symptoms like redness of the eyelids, irritation, itchiness, watery eyes, discharge, or puffy eyes.

Causes of Pink Eye

Although there are many causes of pink eye, the common types of conjunctivitis we see at our clinic include:

Viruses

Viruses are one of the common causes of pink eye.

Bacteria

Several types of bacteria cause conjunctivitis. They include Haemophilus influenza, staphylococcus, and streptococcus pneumonia.

Allergens

These are substances such as pollen, mold, animal dander, dust, or any other substance that causes allergies.

Other causes include:

  • Irritants such as cosmetics, contact lenses, shampoos, pool chlorine, dirt, and smoke
  • Sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea
  • Foreign bodies in the eye, like a loose eyelash
  • Fungi
  • Parasites and amoebas

Pink eye is highly contagious. Our eye doctors may advise you on measures you can take to lower the risk of spreading the infection. Some common ways include:

  • Avoid sharing towels, washcloths, or pillowcases
  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Avoid sharing eye drops, contact lenses, or cosmetics

Testimonials

  • I have worn contact lenses for years but due to my strong near-sighted prescription with high astigmatism could get neither the comfort nor vision very good in standard gas permeable lenses or in soft lenses. I had reverted back to wearing glasses most of the time until Dr. Krywko recommended the SynergEyes lenses. They work great for me and I can finally wear contacts again! Thank you, Dr. Krywko!

  • Dr. Candria Kryko is a wonderful OD. I was seen by Dr. Kryko in Scottsdale recently for an eye exam/contact lens fitting. She is extremely pleasant, attentive, and she took her time to give me a thorough exam and answer all of my questions. Dr. Kryko gave me recommendations on contacts and eye drops, as well, she gave me tips on how I can save on some of my contact expenses. She was professional, attentive, took the time to explain what was needed, and was simply nice to be around. I recommend Dr. Kryko.

  • My entire family have been seeing Dr. Krywko for years. The professionalism, care and focus are over the top. I was told by an optician I would not be a likely candidate for contact lenses. However with Dr. Krywko's patience and wisdom she was able to fit me for contact lenses that work perfectly! I am thrilled..........Plus, I also have the most gorgeous frames (when I do not want to wear my contacts. ) I receive comments every time I wear them, " where did you get your glasses!" Dr. Kryko just received the newest styles......I'm in trouble..........
